Event
outline:It is said that in order to decouple the problems of climate change, resource depletion, environmental pollution, etc. from economic growth, and achieve sustainable growth, we need a new economic model that breaks away from the conventional economic system of mass production, mass consumption, and mass disposal.
One such model that has become the center of attention in recent years is the circular economy.
“Circular economy” refers to an economic system that creates value by recycling and reusing resources, as opposed to the conventional economic system (linear economy) that uses resources following a linear process of mining, processing, consumption, and disposal.
The study and construction of this circular economy requires research and knowledge in various fields, such as resources and environmental impact, industrial technology, economic systems, consumer behavior and value formation, as well as industry-academia-government cooperation. In particular, there is a need to combine the practical knowledge of industry with the specialized knowledge of academia to build business models.
With a view to tackling these issues, we have established the Collaboration Research Unit on Circular Economy Modeling towards Cleaner Air (IFI-CEM Collaboration Research Unit) under the corporate-university relations agreement between Daikin Industries, Ltd. and the University of Tokyo.
In this symposium commemorating the founding of the unit, we would like to introduce the purpose for establishing the unit and the goals of its activities, and ask experts to deliver lectures on the trend of research on the circular economy, thereby gathering a wide range of knowledge and building momentum towards the creation of a new business model that will lead the world.
